Geoscience Australia said it had received more than 21,000 reports of the quake, with shockwaves felt as far away as the city of Bendigo, about 150 kilometers north of Melbourne, and as far south as Hobart on the island of Tasmania.
The tremor stuck the region, which is north east of New Zealand just before 11am AEDT, at a depth of 10km, according to Geoscience Australia.
While earthquakes commonly take place on the edge of tectonic plates, Geoscience Australia says they do not occur as often within the plates themselves.
